The Royal Asscher Diamond Company, founded in 1854 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, invented the Asscher cut in the early 20th century and still stands at Tolstraat 127. An Asscher cut is a modification on the more popular diamond cut, the older Cushion cut. The Asscher cut is a square emerald cut with cropped corners. It was very popular in the 1920s but slowly declined in fashion. Recently though, Asscher cut diamond have staged a come back because of their use in popular programs such as Sex and the City and has been the cut used in some celebrity engagement rings.
